The lips are one of the most popular sites for volume enhancement.

Hyaluronic acid fillers can be used to add volume to the red lip (vermillion), increase definition, and treat vertical creases around the mouth. It can be performed in the upper lip, the lower lip, or both. While small volumes of lip filler can give a nice subtle enhancement, overly aggressive use of fillers can look cartoonish and unnatural. Most of our patients are looking for enhancement rather than an “operated on” look.

What are Lip Fillers?

Lip fillers are typically made of hyaluronic acid which is a naturally occurring component of soft tissues.

While it is synthetically produced it is well tolerated by the body, and unlike old-fashioned collagen injections does not carry the risk of an allergic reaction. The gels are produced by a number of manufacturers and are clear gels that are packaged in 1cubic centimeter (cc) or milliliter size doses.

Restylane Lip Fillers

Restylane Silk and Restylane Kysse are two of the most common hyaluronic fillers we use for lip enhancement. Typically, only one or two syringes (each one mL) are needed. The procedure takes only a few minutes and is performed in the office with small injections.

Lip fillers can last four to six months, and can safely be repeated. Because of all the motion around the mouth, lip fillers may not last as long as fillers in the cheeks. Striving to deliver the best lip filers Boston has to offer, we typically encouraging patients to start with a low volume and add more if necessary, which is unusual. This can be an ideal procedure for patients who want the enhancement of their lip volume, symmetry, contour, and skin quality.

Lip Filler Frequently Asked Questions

How long do lip fillers last?

Typically lip fillers provide 5-7 months of enhancement. Because it is a high motion area, lip fillers may not last quite as long as fillers in the cheeks or other facial fillers, where there is less activity. While this is the most typical duration, there is quite a wide bell curve, and some patients may experience either shorter-term or longer-term results.

How much does treatment with lip filler cost?

Like all injections, it depends on which and how much product is injected. Typically recommend starting with 1 syringe or 1cc. There are a few different products that may be considered depending on patient presentation. A typical price range for lip fillers would be between $700-900.

Lip Filler Downtime & Recovery

The most typical reaction to lip fillers is worsening swelling for a day or two after the procedure, followed by a relatively quick reduction in swelling. While the procedure involves small injections that can be sensitive, it is not typically painful after the procedure. Apart from avoiding very strenuous activity immediately after the procedure, there are no major restrictions on your activity after lip fillers.

The lips typically swell quite a bit, often getting worse for the first couple of days before getting better. We often warn our Boston Lip Filler patients that a day or two after injections they will fear there is too much filler, but it is largely swelling. We recommend icing the lips for 20 minutes at a time for the first day or two after the procedure. Although people typically look presentable, It is ideal not to have a big social event scheduled for a day or two after the procedure when the swelling will be at its peak.
