Hyaluronic Acid Facial Fillers in Boston

Dermal fillers can help restore or add facial volume, and can be particularly useful in the cheeks, lips and lower face. Facial fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring component of the body’s soft tissues. They are injected with a small needle, in the office, without the need for anesthesia.

What are Restylane, Juvederm and Versa?

Facial Fillers Boston

Approved by the FDA, Restylane, Juvederm and Revanesse Versa contain high-quality hyaluronic acid particles. Hyaluronic acid is a string of sugars that are naturally produced in the body. By binding to water, they add volume smoothing the overlying skin and enhancing facial shape. They exist in different formulations, for use in different depths and areas of the face.

Some formulations are particularly well suited to treatment around the mouth for fine lines, others are good for nasolabial creases and marionette lines, and others are better suited to deeper placement along the cheek bones. Some formulations contain local anesthetic, and some are pure Hyaluronic acid filler. If you are looking for non-surgical facial rejuvenation, hyaluronic acid dermal fillers may be a good place to start.

Dr. Taylor and Dr. Sullivan are diplomates of the American Board of Plastic Surgery, fellows of the American College of Surgeons, and fellowship-trained in Facial and Craniomaxillofacial Plastic Surgery. Dr. Helena O. Taylor and Dr. Stephen R. Sullivan will personally evaluate you and perform your dermal filler treatment. Together you will decide on your areas of priority, and they will help you determine what might be maximally beneficial. The injections are performed with a small needle, without the need for anesthesia, though some of the facial fillers contain a small amount of local anesthetic. This takes five to 15 minutes, and patients tolerate this well.

Facial Filler Results

Unlike neurotoxins, the results of facial fillers are immediately apparent, but can take several days to fully “set up.” By adding volume to the soft tissue the facial shape can be enhanced, and deep and fine creases in the mid and lower face can be improved.

The dermal fillers can last for five to ten months, with some variation depending on location and the individual. The risks of fillers include swelling, bruising, asymmetry, and intravascular injection. The lips are notorious for swelling, and for the first 48 hours we expect the lips to be significantly larger than they will be thereafter.

Bruising is less common in the cheeks, and more common around the mouth and chin. This is typically mild, resolves within a few days, and can be covered with makeup. The dreaded risk of filler injections is intravascular injection. This is when the filler enters and blocks a small blood vessel leading to downstream tissue damage.

When it comes to facial fillers Boston craniofacial surgeons, Dr Taylor and Dr Sullivan are well versed in the vascular anatomy of the face, and aim to minimize these risks as much as possible. The individual variations in anatomy, and the nature of minimally invasive injections means the risks can never be entirely eliminated, however significant complications are thankfully rare.

Dermal Filler Recovery?

The procedure takes less than an hour and there is little to no downtime. Most Boston dermal filler patients return to work or their daily routine after their visit. The treatment area that might have significant swelling is the lips, so we recommend doing lip fillers when one can be low profile for couple of days. We also recommend avoiding very strenuous exercises for a couple of days. Bruising, itching, redness, and some tenderness, may last a couple of days, but is typically mild.
