Facelift surgery, medically known as Rhytidectomy, is a popular cosmetic procedure designed to rejuvenate the face by reducing the visible signs of aging. Over time, our skin loses its elasticity and muscle tone. This can lead to sagging, wrinkles, and deeper folds. Facelift surgery targets these areas by tightening the underlying tissues and removing excess skin. This results in a smoother, more youthful appearance in patients. Whether caused by genetics, lifestyle factors, or the natural aging process, a Facelift can dramatically refresh one’s overall appearance, confidence and self-esteem.
There are many different approaches from more limited skin excisions to “deep plane” Facelifts where the muscles are elevated off the bone. In our practice, having tried lots of different techniques, we favor a SMAS plication procedure, that aggressively tightens the underlying structures, without overly tightening the skin. In our experience, this puts things back where they belong, without making you look “operated on” or like a completely different person. It also balances safety with respect to risks to the facial nerves. Very frequently, we will combine other procedures to enhance results such as a small volume of fat grafting to the cheeks and lips, eyelid surgery, lip lift, etc. at the time of a Facelift.
The procedure typically involves an incision along the hairline, around the ears, and sometimes under the chin, allowing the surgeon to access the underlying facial muscles. These muscles are then tightened, and excess skin is trimmed. In some cases, liposuction may also be used to remove fat deposits from the neck or jawline. This comprehensive approach addresses not only sagging skin, but also the loss of facial volume that contributes to an aged appearance. While the procedure takes a few hours and requires a period of recovery, the results can last for several years, providing a long-term solution to facial aging.
One of the main reasons people opt for Facelift surgery is to regain confidence in their appearance. However, like any surgery, it’s important to have realistic expectations and understand the potential risks. Complications can include scarring, bleeding, nerve injury, etc. While Facelift surgery offers transformative results, it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. Individuals considering the procedure should discuss their goals and concerns with the surgeon to determine if they are suitable candidates. For some, a Facelift may be combined with other procedures, such as eyelid surgery or a brow lift, to achieve a more comprehensive rejuvenation. Ultimately, Facelift surgery can be a powerful tool in restoring a youthful appearance, but careful planning and realistic expectations are essential to ensure the best possible results.
